Danny Keough

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel "Danny" Keough (born November 6, 1964) is a musician and actor. He is widely known for being the first husband of Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley and remained friends with her until her death in January 2023.[1]

Early life and career

[edit]

Keough was born in Chicago, IL on November 6, 1964.[1]After marrying Lisa Marie Presley in 1988, he worked at Mad Hatter Studios.[1]

In 2019, he acted in the film The Lodge.[1]

In the early 2000's Keough was a bass guitar player in Presley's band, and also served as her musical mentor.[2][3]

Keough has music credits on two TV films from the year 2000, Cabin by the Lake and The Darkling.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Marriage to Lisa Marie Presley

[edit]

Keough married Presley at the Church of Scientology in Hollywood on October 3, 1988.[4] Keough is a Scientologist, and met Lisa at the Scientology Celebrity Centre.[5][6][7][8][9] The couple had dated for three years before marriage.[10] Keough and Presley spent a three-month honeymoon on a cruise in the Caribbean, on a yacht owned by Church of Scientology, the SMV Freewinds.[11][12][13] Scientology publicists stated that they were accompanied on the ship by Scientology celebrities including musician Chick Corea, and Olympic gymnast Charles Lakes.[11][14]

Children

[edit]

Lisa Marie has stated that she had an abortion the first time she got pregnant with Keough's baby and that it was the stupidest thing she has ever done.[15][16] She broke up with Keough soon after, but devastated with the abortion, she wanted another kid and she plotted a scheme to follow Keough to a cruise ship where he was performing to get together with him and get pregnant again.[15] The plan worked and soon they had their first kid Danielle Riley Keough born in 1989 and Benjamin Storm Keough born in 1992.[6][7][17][18] Benjamin was delivered according to a Church of Scientology practice called "Silent birth".[19][20]

In a 2003 interview with The Commercial Appeal, Presley commented on reports that she and Keough were planning to remarry: "Danny is my best friend, always has been, always will be. I love him unconditionally, but we are not together. It's not like that."[21]

Benjamin Keough died on July 12, 2020, at the age of 27 in Calabasas, California, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office listed his death as a suicide.[22]

Divorce

[edit]

Presley announced she was ending her marriage to Keough in April 1994, and the couple divorced on May 3, 1994, in the Dominican Republic.[17][23][24][25][26][27] At the time of the divorce, Presley stated "Danny and I will always love each other. However, friendship was more suitable for us than marriage. We have two wonderful children and we plan to have joint custody of them."[28][29] In 1994, Keough said he would seek custody of his children with Presley, due to child molestation charges against Michael Jackson, who Presley married after their divorce.[30]

After their divorce Lisa Marie Presley still regarded Keough as a close friend,[31][32] and remained good friends until her death in January 2023.[33]

Keough and Presley became closer after Presley divorced Michael Jackson.[34][35][36][37] Keough's younger brother Thomas Keough had been an official witness at Presley's marriage to Michael Jackson.[27]
